Mahindra Thar Upgraded After 3 Lakh Sales in 5 Years – New Features, Price & Variants

Mahindra & Mahindra has introduced an upgraded version of its popular Mahindra Thar SUV, shortly after celebrating a major sales milestone of 3,00,000 units in just five years. The Mahindra Thar has been instrumental in Mahindra’s growth, contributing nearly one-fifth of the company’s total SUV sales during this period. This strong performance has helped establish Mahindra as India’s largest SUV maker by revenue.

The new Mahindra Thar comes with a refreshed design and improved features. On the exterior, it now sports a new front grille paired with a dual-tone bumper and stylish R18 alloy wheels. Inside, the cabin has been updated with an all-black dashboard, a new steering wheel, and a redesigned center console featuring a sliding armrest and rear AC vents. The SUV also comes equipped with a 26.03 cm touchscreen infotainment system supporting Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, along with door-mounted power windows, an internally operated fuel lid, rear-view camera, and rear windscreen wiper. Mahindra has also introduced two new colour options, Tango Red and Battleship Grey.

Under the hood, the new Mahindra Thar continues to offer three engine options. The 2.0 mStallion petrol engine delivers 150 BHP with 300 Nm of torque, the 2.2 mHawk diesel produces 130 BHP and 300 Nm, while the 1.5-litre D117 CRDe diesel generates 117 BHP with 300 Nm of torque. Transmission choices include both manual and automatic across RWD and 4WD variants. Prices for the new Thar start at ₹9.99 lakh and go up to ₹16.99 lakh, depending on the variant and powertrain.

Mahindra’s SUV business has seen remarkable growth in recent years, with sales rising 182 percent to 5,28,460 units in 2024 from 1,86,942 units in 2020. Over the past five years, the company has sold more than 16.8 lakh SUVs, with the Mahindra Thar alone contributing close to 20 percent of the total. This achievement underscores the SUV’s strong appeal among Indian buyers and its crucial role in Mahindra’s journey to market leadership.
